David Rotundo and Jerome Godboo - The Rex
David Rotundo and Jerome Godboo
The Rex, Toronto
Saturday, September 20, 2008
The Rex Jazz and Blues Bar on a Saturday afternoon
Has Jerome Godboo wearing sunglasses
David Rotundo wears them too
With a grey-checkered hat and a short-sleeved shirt to match
The very first blow causes nipples to react
Claiming Rex real estate with a stage view is hard
So folks are sitting atop the bar
"if you don't help me mama
I'll find someone who will"
With foot-stompin' harmonica grunt
David Rotundo's on fire too
The bassist sings one
As folks crash the throughway and the front door
But everyone hushes when Jerome explores
Mouth organ over wedding ring and fret
"drinking moonshine whiskey
And smoking cigarettes"
Worries and Troubles has Desmond Brown's wah wah
Responsible for the dirty blues and lowdown raw raw
With driving drums and groovy bass
The rhythm section is an earthquake
The tattooed bartender aims to please
With blue straw, iced soda and lime freeze
Thick towels wipe sweat from those who blow
Over the drum kit who's banging a solo
The second song has Jerome singing for Jane
But his lovely bride is not here today
Rotundo sits atop the left-sided bar
And Janey Jane has great guitar
The vibe is electric and the energy screams
When Rotundo finally jumps down
For a song that makes me think Cream
"I wish I was a catfish swimming in the sea
With all you women swimming after me"
Desmond Brown trades licks with Dan DuFour
And we get hungry for more
Gum-chewing Shane Scott on bad-ass bass
And mouth organ slaps across the face
Rotundo has great smile under curly haired cap
As the ladies in the room shake and the boys finger tap
Godboo grunts a growl with high-pitched spit
Hot mouth organ steaming
Jerome's vocals on this…
"please mama!"
The last song will have audience flailing to and fro
Making love crazy immediately following the show
"Can I come in your kitchen babe
And cook all night long with you?
Your stove is so hot baby
I just gotta do some cooking too"
David's singing it and sinking low
"I love to lick your pudding
Right from the bowl"
With imaginary horse's whip
Jerome climbs aboard
Riding Rotundo like a rodeo horn
It's f*king hilarious as cracks appear
"I gotta get down on your cherry pie"
Oh, yes dear!
The Rex runs tight four times a day
And climax encores are not paid
But banging wood against glass
Exclaiming, "one more, one more!"
Godboo is the diplomat, oh lord!
The next band will have to wait
Or throw a bucket of cold water our way
Because The Kitchen Song cannot contain
This randy house for much longer today
