The Hogtown Syncopators at the Rex
The Hogtown Syncopators at The Rex
by Live Music Head
Spontaneousness had me at the Rex yesterday evening
Suddenly got the need for a Hogtown fix
And I was hoping Mike Daley would be in attendance
The Hogtown Syncopators hold the 4-6pm slot on Fridays
And there have been several occasions where he was missing
Likely because of that damn Classic Albums Live series
Keeping him on the road playing that damn Beatle music
I'm a big fan of Mike
And therefore was very pleased to see him on stage when I arrived
And the lively after-work bar crowd
I think I came in during All My Eggs in One Basket
Or Across the Alley from the Alamo?
And it's that outstanding fiddle player in the band
Drew Jurecka
Man, he's good
Man!
Maybe I'll have to get a Corona now
It's Friday, it's springtime
And a Corona would do nicely to shed the day at the office
But no, I best not get started at this early hour
Alcohol has been less than kind to me lately
So a tea toddler was I for this gig
Just About Knocked Me Out was fun
Got me singing along with it
A great vibe in the room
I love this old timey swing jazz band
Like an old b&w movie
Makes you think of
Bob Hope, USO shows, the world war era
And Django Reinhardt
Actually I spotted the bass player from Club Django in the audience
I love many genres of music
Especially when done well live and kept true
Like this band of musicians
Who are younger than most musicians I've seen play this type of music
Which is great, keeps it alive
A five-piece
In addition to the fiddle and Mike on electric
Jay Danley plays the acoustic guitar and a rather intense looking fella
By the name of James Thomson on the double bass
And the completely adorable Terra Hazelton on the snare drum
I remember being disappointed
When like Mike, other commitments called her away from this gig in the past
Terra is charming
With a flirtatious playfulness singing a blues tune like
King Size Papa
Mama, I heard those gutsy growls
My attention to the band was harder after
Grateful Dave limped into the Rex for some soothing tunes
Experiencing the affects of the drugs he took to kill his pain
I lent him my left ear to tell the story of his ankle injury
While giving as much attention
To Mike singing Saturday Nite Fishfry
And Jeff who I was sharing
Some great Rex pub grub with
But I didn't forget to buy a cd this time
Been listening to it today
Mike, you bring a tear to the eye with track 4, After You've Gone
Great singing, backup vocals and bass playing
(I'm a) Little Bluebird... lovely!
And Hungarian Dance No. 5
With that outstanding fiddle again
Much to like about this recording
Thanks to Mike and the band for autographing it for me
I think I'll be playing this one on Sunday morning
