James Brown’s Soul Generals
James Brown's Soul Generals
Nathan Phillips Square
Saturday, June 7, 2008
Having learned the start time earlier in the day
I timed it perfectly
Arriving at Queen and University at 7:20pm
Walked right up to the front of the stage
Already smiling with anticipation of what that large group of brothers
Were gonna hit me with
This will be a class act
James Brown's Soul Generals
Hit me!
With 2 bass, 2 guitars, 2 keyboards
A drummer, a percussionist and a horn section
Sax, trumpet and slide trombone
And featuring none other than the son of the Godfather of Soul
Daryl Brown, the band leader on guitar
We're looking at a 12-piece here including the lead singer
11 black men, all dressed in stylish black suits
A sea of black the stage is
Except for the one single white guy in the band
Can't help but notice him sticking out of one of the funky bass guitars
Alongside the original JB bassist, Fred Thomas
They all look like they're ready to go and it's now 7:40pm
I just know I'm gonna love this
The Luminato MC starts to hype the crowd
And just when I think we're ready for the band to start
We get the Samba Squad instead!
Marching in from side stage, banging on their drums
WTF?
I'm like…
"oh, for the love of god… just bring on the Soul Generals, please!"
I love drums but the Samba Squad's whistle blowing is so annoying
Fortunately the Squad banged and blew for such a short spell
I couldn't help but wonder
Why they were there at all?
God!
The Generals finally started
And I'm transported back to the world of James Brown by the 2nd song
We're Gonna Have a Funky Good Time
My hips are shaking
And there's a light breeze blowing to keep the insufferable heat at bay
I'm happy
They followed that great tune with Turn Me Loose and Superbad
"I got sooooouuuul, and I'm superbad!"
I'm loving this when the band suddenly stops mid-song
WTF?
I could not tell what was up
Until Daryl Brown comes to the centre mic
And says with a southern drawl...
"Ya'll realize if my daddy was here…. he would not tolerate this!"
Apparently there's feedback and sound issues on the stage
For which my ears did not detect
But the band sure are in a flurry about it
Ha!
And it's true
James Brown was apparently such a perfectionist
He would dock his band members $25
If they played the wrong note or didn't have their shoes shined
I love that
The Generals learned from him
Daryl Brown apologized to the crowd
But it seemed to take only moments to straighten out the problem
And the band went straight into Georgia on My Mind
With one of the keyboardists taking the vocal, sounding wonderful
Giving me my first set of goose bumps
Before leaving that tune to go into Pass the Peas
And oh mama, it's all about the wah wah pedal now
Oh yea… this girl likes the funky wah wah
Doesn't every funky rock and roll chick like the wah wah?
And baby, that's good!
Who's the lead singer?
He has real class and style whoever he is
Similar in looks to that of, dare I say, Marvin Gaye
But his vocals are definitely more like James Brown
Asking us… "ladies, will you make a little noise for me please?!"
Before hitting us with a big soulful version of
It's a Man's, Man's, Man's, World
I remember being tired of this song for a while
But not anymore
This performance of the song is very exciting
With some great soloing guitar
And then my ears fell back on that wah wah again
And the song Payback
I'm so glad I'm here with this perfect viewing spot
"Paul?" "Where's Paul?"
He must be off with his camera, trying to get the perfect shot
If not for him, I may not have made it to the show
Thank you Paul for making the effort to get the start time for me
And I even got room to shake my hips
My eyes and ears are all over that horn section now
They sound so good
They're all warmed up and quite playful
That sax player is particularly sassy
But when they all start twirling their instruments together
Holy mother of brothers….
I Got You (I Feel Good) comes next
An over played and tired song you may think
And I agree
However…
This was a real fun version
Hit me!
The band is tight, tight, tight
I'm telling ya!
James Brown is doing the splits right now in the clouds above us
Along with the hot dancers that just appeared on stage
This band could easily play for 3.5 hours
But I suspect being a festival gig, they're watching the clock
We'll be lucky to get an hour and a half
And sure enough it appears Sex Machine is the last song
When I get the text to move on out
A friend has arrived at our meeting point back at the NPS pool
So we caught the encore on the big screen
They did a sandwich of James Brown and Jimi Hendrix
Was the opening and closing Star Spangled Banner or Foxy Lady?
I feel so stupid because I should know, dammit
One thing's for certain
I'm Black and I'm Proud was the meat between the sandwich
Thank you boys!
You got the funk
After-show chatter had me considering
Hmmm?
Should I stay for Morris Day and the Time?
They're up next
It would be hilarious to see this band
They're the same band that played Prince's rival group
In the film Purple Rain, right?
Ah!
Had I stayed for it, I'm sure it would've been a hoot
But no, I have to go
My favourite singer songwriter is playing up the road
In Kensington Market, starting his first set soon
And I prefer to unwind there
But ya know…
The Soul Generals sure gave me a good kick in the butt
To buy my ticket for Maceo Parker
Another one from the school of James Brown
And a show I will not miss
When it rolls into town on June 20
