The Seeger Sessions & Live in New York City (dvd review)

Bruce Springsteen's Seeger Sessions
& Live in New York City
by Live Music Head

A little behind
But I finally got a copy of the Seeger Sessions dvd from 2006
We Shall Overcome
Watching Bruce Springsteen hanging out in the kitchen
And in the living room dancing around, having a drink
With his wife Patti and their friends
Looking crumpled in plaid shirt with i-just-got-outta-bed hair
Was such a treat!
Going back to roots and folk music is where it's at
With recording equipment everywhere
Musicians are all over the place in this house
While the Boss leads with some great covers like Shenandoah
And Oh Mary Don't Weep
Some scenes show the horn section stored in the hall doorway
And some scenes have the band out in the yard performing Buffalo Gals
I love that song!
Remember George and Mary singing it in the movie, It's a Wonderful Life?
"Buffalo Gals won't you come out tonight,
won't you come out tonight, won't you come out tonight…"

And I loved hearing Bruce talk about traditional instruments
How they're meant to travel and be played real
Hobo music
Not to be plugged in
And you get some of that here
But it's shorter than most dvds
Left me wanting more
For anyone who hasn't yet viewed or heard this work, you must!

Because it left me wanting more
I also had to play Live in New York City again
The dvd from 2001
I just love Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band
Laugh out loud funny during songs like
Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out with band introductions
As he talks like a rock and roll preacher
Nils Lofgren does good and funny rock guitar god during Youngstown
And I just love Little Steven's vocals
And the Big Man… who doesn't love him?
If you're like me and not a fan of the song Born in the USA
The acoustic version will make you like it
And drive home the fact that it really is a great song
Just like the slow live version of No Surrender
The live version is much better than the studio version I think
This dvd makes me emotional as would be expected during songs like
Jungleland, Thunder Road and If I Should Fall Behind
And my all-time favourite Out in the Street
My memories of seeing Bruce and the band live
I treasure them
He is, and always will be the right soundtrack
For all the youthfulness and romance of my rock and roll heart
For anyone who hasn't seen this one, you must!

p.s.
I couldn't help thinking about Tom Waits during the Seeger Sessions
He jumped right into my mind
Some of those songs he would wear well singing
Actually, I think he does sing some of them on a recording or two somewhere
And what about our own Silver Hearts?
These Sessions got me thinking of them too
The Silver Hearts performed the entire Rain Dogs album live
I saw it, and it blew me away
They're quite a band in their own right
If you care to check out a hugh beer brothel folkestra, these guys are it…
