Exchanging Notes ~ James Joyce Pub
Exchanging Notes ~ James Joyce Pub
Open Mic Night
386 Bloor St W, Toronto
Sunday, January 25, 2009
Everything is green to me
Twinkle lights, window lined
A Heineken sign
Shamrock flags drip down the bar
St Patrick's day is none too far
Ethelrida sings and plays
Overtop conversation of sparking a "j"
"my soul cries out", with intensity
"dear god, i'm empty!"
The clack of pool cues hitting balls
A coffee is poured from a waitress tall
"The Living Scarecrow is you and me"
When suddenly I see Don Cherry!
A suit of pink and a shirt of white
On a Canadian big screen, it's Hockey Night
Moosehead, Steam Whistle, Alexander Keith
And through the window, Bloor Street
Outside, a sign reads FedEx
And Kinko's copy sits beside Mt Everest
Inside, it's the U of T writing group
Not just writers but musicians too
There's Mitchell, John, and I spot Kris
At a table, sitting beside Margaret
Above a register, a tv makes 3
When the pub grows quiet, momentarily
Margaret's up and her spoken word, sad
Because "'96 Scottish children were stabbed"
When happy hour and 3 cent wings were hot
I left my bike once, out front unlocked
"This song goes out...
to everyone with a penis", John teases
Over pre-programmed percussion machine
"Hey one-eye, what's the story?", John reads
The penis speaks with groovy bass notations
Sounding like David Essex or The Temptations
A waitress appears to my right
Holding a pitcher and glowing tea lights
The penis rap is left behind
For a Now Magazine, John finds
"i appreciate all thing's Jewish", he says
An improvised rap is what this is
And the improvisation is hilarious!
When the door swings, a rush of cold air
"Red alert!" and vegetarians beware
Mustard, onion and hamburger rare
Wafting past from over there
Wicker basket, brown paper lined
With french fries too, on the side
New Jersey tap shoes, look at those!
From a mobile facebook, i see photos
The Now Magazine, penis and green
Makes sunday Night at the Opera fit for a Queen
A guy sings Ziggy Stardust
"like some cat from Japan"
It's a free-for-all stage and open mic jam
A blast of feedback, a rhyming rap
He's wearing a backward baseball cap
"evolving elevation, inspiration divine"
At 8:35, the stage runs overtime
"God Is In Your Mind!"
"GOD IS IN YOUR MIND!!"
Suddenly Ethelrida shouts,"that sounds like mine!"
Her notebook on stage was left behind
For a rapper to pull words and random lines
I thought I'd laugh until I cried
Laying down some hard earned money
"it was nice to meet you,
tonight was very funny"
With coffee tab fully paid
To Margaret and Kris, farewells are bade
And from the James Joyce open stage
John says,
"please come back again"
