Erin Hunt ~ The Cameron House

Erin Hunt
The Cameron House, Toronto

Near the front door of paradise
A club soda and I sit
Wondering where the band is
Five minutes later
At the sound of a booming bass
I realize
They’re in the back room
Under the video cabaret
But of course!
Walking through the dark room
I see tattooed arms in tight black shirt
Banging two congas
There’s an acoustic playing on a stool
For the band is sound checking
Yamaha keys and a backup vocal
A baseball cap sits atop the booming bass
While behind the microphone stand
Erin Hunt fronts her band
“I never expected what was easy
But I never really thought that
Things would get so hard
As time passes on
More reasons go unanswered
Still
I know we all belong”
My first time seeing this band
And it sounds warm
Like I’m listening to the record
Meet me in the Middle
But without the horns
Perhaps I’ll ask about the missing brass
After the check, if I get a chance
Green leaves hang from the ceiling above me
And strewn atop mirrored windows
Blood red drapery
At 9:35 the small room is filling up quick
Over horn-driven songs by old rock and rollers
Now playing overhead
But returning from the ladies room
Little Richard is disconnected
When the band begins their set
And it’s Erin Hunt’s rhythm and blues
That now has my full attention
“Before it all came down
When you were my man
Nothing could keep me from loving you
I was in the palm of your hand”
She plays acoustic guitar too, when she sings
“I no longer deny
Your love don’t feel good inside
If you could only see
Your lies”
Strumming over the tinkling ivories
Ms Hunt has me forgetting my favourites of the 70s
To get excited over something new
But wait just a minute
Up next is a cover?
I wonder if I know it
“Locals were up kicking and shaking on the floor
And the next thing I know
That Coyote's at my door
He pins me in a corner and he won't take "No!"
He drags me out on the dance floor”
Ah, something old after all
From the one and only Joni Mitchell
Erin Hunt sang and played it perfectly
And when her acoustic is put down
Four introductions are made
As we meet the band
Tom, Ricky and both Daves
Impressive
But this show really is only an introduction
After all, a 45 minute set was played
Making time for the following act
But to see them, I won’t stay
Because it’ll be nice to be back home
At a decent time on a Wednesday
It was a pleasure to meet Erin after the set
Who told me about back-up singers
And a horn section
At the Supermarket gig coming up in May
The band will be complete
So to be there, I mustn’t forget
And just before heading out the front door
I laugh with Tom
When the booming bass player tells me...
“I’ve had that bass since the age of 18
And with it, I still sometimes sleep
Even now in my 40s, and I’m married”
