Stayin' Alive

Stayin' Alive
written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb
Released by The Bee Gees, 1977
by Live Music Head

“Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk,
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk.
Music loud and women warm,
I've been kicked around since I was born.
And now it's all right, that’s okay,
and you may look the other way.
We can try to understand The New York Times' effect on man.
Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother,
you're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin',
and we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive!
Well now, I get low and I get high,
and if I can't get either, I really try.
Got the wings of heaven on my shoes,
I'm a dancin' man and I just can't lose.
You know it's all right. It's okay.
I'll live to see another day.
Life goin' nowhere. Somebody help me.
Somebody help me, yeah.
Life goin' nowhere.  Somebody help me.
Somebody help me, yeah.”
~ Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb

When I saw the song title, I thought no... it can’t be.
But it was!
OMFG! Of course it was!
Last night at the Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia,
Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band
opened with Stayin’ Alive!
Stayin’ Alive!!
STAYIN’ ALIVE!!!
And with a sexy hot trumpet to boot!
OMFG.
I listen to Stayin’ Alive all the f@#*ing time,
especially when I hit the cold
nine hundred degrees below zero streets of Toronto,
wearing layers of clothing that weigh more than me,
all iPod-ed up.
I talk about the song a lot too,
perhaps even too much.
Not two weeks ago, on Feb 15,
it was the song I asked the dj at Harbourfront ice rink
to play for me while I skated.
And he did.
Joy!
It was also the song I chose to post on Facebook days later,
on Feb 18,
to celebrate Tony Manero
on the birthday of John Travolta
because I was in a Romeo Fever
for two straight Saturday Nights in a row!
On the same day, I also posted the promo clip of Jimmy Fallon,
that great talk show host I have an enormous crush on,
because he dressed up like Tony Manero
to strut his stuff to the same beat,
in celebration of taking The Tonight Show back to New York...
We can try to understand The New York Times' effect on man...
Stayin’ Awake!
Is it really a surprise that The Boss played the song last night?
True, he probably chose to play a Brothers Gibb song because hell,
he was performing in their adopted homeland after all.... but,
with an enormous catalogue such as The Bee Gees
to choose from,
why do you think he chose Stayin’ Alive?
I’ll tell you why!
Because the man always has his finger on the pulse!
Because it’s the theme song for a lot of folks...
many, many, many folks, including me,
who go out there every god damn day,
armed with everything we got,
to do what we gotta do,
just to STAY ALIVE!
