Gary Weeks

Gary Weeks
by Live Music Head

I was managing a small Toronto copy shop in the early nineties
where I went to work every day wearing hippie dresses,
Birkenstock sandals, earrings I made myself,
and bells around my ankles so you’d hear me coming.
Seems a lifetime ago.
And while I worked,
I sang along to all the golden oldies that were heard coming
from the shop’s ghetto blaster,
the dial of which was permanently stuck on 1050 CHUM.
One day a fella came into the shop to enquire about
printing a religious tract...
you know those small Christian pamphlets asking if you’d heard “the news”?
Tracts that are often found
on the seats of TTC buses, streetcars and subways?
Well, while I was pricing out the cost of the print run,
It Might as Well Rain Until September came on the radio.
The fella standing in front of me suddenly burst out:
“Hey, that’s me!”
The fella was none other than Gary Weeks,
Canadian singer-songwriter from the 1970’s pop duo,
Gary & Dave.
I was like, “Wow, really?”
Over the course of a couple weeks as we worked on the artwork for his print run,
I learned that Gary had given up the business of music
to become a born-again Christian.
Soon I was participating in bible studies at his house
with his lovely wife and neighbours.
I even went to church with his family.
I’ve always been fascinated with the life of Jesus Christ
and the Weeks’ were very lovely people to talk about it with.
But convert me?
No.
And where is Gary now?
I do not know.
But I think of him every time I hear the songs,
which is quite often because songs like
Could You Ever Love Me Again?
are still heard all the time on AM 1150 CKOC,
which is where the dial is now permanently stuck
on my kitchen ghetto blaster.
