Maceo Parker ~ The Sound Academy

Maceo Parker
Sound Academy , Toronto

by Live Music Head

I was truly honoured
To find myself at the very front of the Sound Academy stage on Friday night
Resting my elbows and gazing up at the tightest little funk orchestra on earth
Along with 2 backup vocalists, keyboards, guitar, drums and bass
The slide trombone and trumpet were fronted by the great bandleader
Maceo Parker on vocals, saxophone and flute
Unlike the outrageous parade of pimp costumes which grace the stage of performances by George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic
Maceo Parker is all class
Perfectly groomed in stylish suit and tie
No wrinkle could be found
With a shiny saxophone slung over his neck
Even his wedding ring glowed bright
And the same could be said for the entire band
Immaculate
Pressed and manicured
With a twinkle in the eye of the handsome slide trombonist
The trumpet player joins him raising their instruments up high
Accompanying Maceo who is blowing blasts of spit splatter saxophone
As he leads the band to Make it Funky
And the crowd sways
Oh my god
They sound so good
I didn't think it could sound this good being so close to the stage
I'm no longer feeling guilty for skipping my pilates class
As the funk provides the best hip openers you can imagine
The sheer brilliance of the playing
The professionalism
The way the horns move side stage when a solo is taking place
Returning at the slightest hand signal from their leader
To resume playing perfectly
Is all taken in appreciatively by this member of the audience
Maceo Parker is old school
Playing with the Godfather of Soul for many years
You can see the influence of James Brown all over the stage
And the sound is impeccable
Of all the live shows I've seen
I don't think I've heard sound this good
Absolutely flawless
During band introductions Maceo included the sound man
Telling the audience he brought the sound engineer with him
All the way from New Orleans
And the crowd turned to applaud him
Just Give Me More is a groovy tune
And I notice the musical symbols etched on Maceo's bright blue tie
He puts down his saxophone
And while singing with hand held mic
Does some funky dance steps before hitting us with…
Could it be?
Papa Don't Take No Mess?
This is my favourite James Brown song!
But it's just a tease
Providing a little meat between the Just Give Me More sandwich
Oh Maceo!
Now hardly a day goes by without the Beatles coming up in musical conversations
Their power and influence as a band and individually are everywhere
And it appears it's here again tonight
As the band takes a smooth and jazzy stab at Sir Paul's My Love
Yes, it's all about love
Maceo's love
And with an upbeat twist
"My Love does it good"
There's a young jazz freak in a cool hat bouncing around me
Calling out to Maceo for an autograph
Hardly the time to be making such a request
But Maceo gave the hound what he wanted
From a stage so low
That even a fan of five feet almost feels level with the performers
And then one of the backup singers comes up front
And it's Maceo's son, Corey, who leads us into a rap
Rap funking jazz baby
Oh yea!
A line of beautiful black brothers is laid out before us
With outstretched arms
My friends and I are all smiles when we get our hands shook, tapped and pulled
By the entire horn section
And then a wah wah sound hit my ears
I love that sound
And it's coming from the keyboards
The keyboardist is stealing the show with that sound
What a great effect
The wah wah sound takes us into We're Gonna Have a Funky Good Time
And we are
A really funky good time
Except for an intense but short interruption by a loud aggressive drunk
Who suddenly crashed my space
My ears became free again for the band's beautiful rendition of Georgia
A loving tribute to the great Ray Charles can be heard on disc one of
Maceo Parker's new release Roots and Grooves
As an evening closer we were treated to You Don't Know Me
Another great Ray Charles song where Maceo put on his "Ray"-bans to sing it
To the delight of the crowd
We called the band back for an encore
And man, what an encore it was
Pass the Peas was a big highlite and a great song to finish the night with
And an impressive two and a half hours of live music
I'm no musician
But I bet if any sax players were in the crowd tonight
They went home completely dumbstruck by the genious of it all
Thank you Maceo Parker
And the tightest little funk orchestra on earth
