I recently found myself at Sonic Boom
where I scored Last Man Standing,
a combo cd/dvd from a Jerry Lee Lewis show in New York City,
Sept 2006.
Ron Wood and Nils Lofgren are in his backup band,
along with Jim Keltner on the kit and a slew of special guests.
Right off the top there's a great duet with Tom Jones
"hair of gold, and lips like cherries…"
About 73 years of age here,
Mr Lewis may no longer be shaking his lower limbs,
but my god, his voice sounds great,
singing effortlessly on more duets such as
Who Will the Next Fool Be? with Solomon Burke.
And his fingers have no trouble sliding across
the keys of that fiery piano with tacky flames painted on it.
Give a poor southern boy a kazillion dollars,
and just like Elvis,
suddenly it's Christmas in July.
I love Jerry Lee Lewis,
not only for his musical talent and showmanship,
but for his abundance of confidence,
arrogance and scandalous behaviour too, ha!
A true rebel who tells it like it is, with no regret.
"Don't leave your women-folk around when Jerry Lee's in town."
A rock and roll legend who's been there since the inception,
the Killer responds…
"Just check my track record baby, it stands for itself."
With Lofgren on pedal steel, Chris Isaak joins Jerry Lee
for Somewhere Over the Rainbow,
one of the greatest popular songs ever written, in my opinion.
There are several b&w clips pasted throughout this dvd,
clips we may have all seen,
but leave you wanting more
of Lee's commanding presence and flamboyant style.
Who remembers his Sweet Toronto appearance in the seventies,
still playing piano with bad-ass feet,
sporting stylish "Beatle" boots?
Another highlight of the dvd would be
Don't Put No Headstone on My Grave...
"hell, I've made it this far…
I should have a monument built on it!"
There's also a few of what I will call "livingroom" sessions
including one with Merle Haggard,
and a great version of Will the Circle Be Unbroken
and Good Golly Miss Molly with John Fogerty.
Willie Nelson, my favourite country music outlaw
performs Jambalaya with Jerry Lee,
and if you're an Eagles fan,
Don Henley does an okay version of You Win Again.
Kid Rock follows with Little Queenie by jumping atop Jerry's piano
and then goes into
"I met a gin soaked, bar-room queen in Memphis".
Roll Over Beethoven takes the show out,
and the to-be-expected...
Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On,
where the 73-year old gives us a little tease of the young Jerry Lee
by standing up and kicking back his piano stool.
"I'd put him on Mt Rushmore" ~ Kid Rock
The bonus features contain snippets and stories
from friends and family,
including his daughter Phoebe who tells one
about her dad that involves spit.
All in all,
not an award-winning dvd,
but with a sweet Goodnight Irene,
thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.
And totally worth every single penny of the $9.95 I paid for it.
