The Death of Michael Jackson ~ 6.25.09
The Death of Michael Jackson

by Live Music Head
The death of Michael Jackson may have been unexpected (sort of),
but this over-the-top media frenzy is not.
Despite his personal troubles
and all the ugly allegations made against him,
Jackson’s enormous talent still shines through.
Such is the amazing and powerful force we call music.
I wouldn’t call myself a big fan of the 80s Michael Jackson,
being hard pressed to see beyond his ridiculous image,
I was too busy rocking out to the likes of Bruce Springsteen
to be bothered with the gloved one back then.
What rock fan would admit to liking
The King of Pop back in the eighties anyway?
Not me.
But I did grow up listening to the Jackson 5.
The hits Michael and his brothers churned out in the 70s
without a doubt,
left a life-long impression on this girl.
My favourite record was the innocent and sweet, Ben.
And I played that 45 record over and over again.
Yet, these days I must admit
when I hear a tune like Billie Jean,
my Doc Martens step up,
and tap right along with it.
Like it or not,
most of the songs on Thriller
and the wickedly choreographed video
will be ingrained in my dna forever.
How could they not?
But out of the hundred or so comments,
status updates and youtube clips
jamming up my Facebook home page since
the news of Michael Jackson's death,
I find I’m only one of two who feels
the need to point out
it was the great Godfather of Soul
who gave him his start.
For Michael Jackson,
James Brown was the most influential
and the biggest inspiration.
Not only could Brown shake a leg like no other,
he was the hardest working man in show business.
Right up to the day we lost him in December, 2006,
and despite all his personal troubles
plastered all over the media, just like Jackson,
Brown was an artist to be reckoned with.
So of course Michael Jackson looked up to him.
Take a moment to look at the clips I posted below
and see for yourself...
as I sit here staring out the window, daydreaming
about what it may look like atop those fluffy clouds.
Lightning bolts may pierce the sky at any moment
followed by cracks of thunder,
when the King of Pop and the Godfather of Soul meet again.
May they both rest in peace.
