Monica Lewinsky: Shame and Survival

Monica Lewinsky: Shame and Survival
by Live Music Head

Of this new article written by Monica Lewinsky
and just released by Vanity Fair,
it’s one of the best I’ve ever read.
She talks about the epic humiliation she survived
back in the late 90s
(and it sure was epic, wasn’t it?)
because of the lyin’, cheatin’, self-serving “man”
who wouldn’t stand up for her.
I remember watching the endless media coverage.
And I read Monica’s book afterward.
I sided with her then, and I side with her now.
I think I admire her even more now,
after reading this article.
Because in it, she shines a big bright light
on how we’ve created
(largely because of the internet)
a culture of humiliation.
She nails it bang on, big time.
Considering what happened to her,
I’m surprised she didn’t off herself.
Had she jumped from a bridge,
it would have been totally understandable.
She prob’ly would have done it too,
if social media was around back then.
Like it wasn’t bad enough as it was,
I shutter to think of what people would have
said about her on Facebook.
And had she offed herself,
you can be sure
she would've been heavily criticized for that too.
Just because she gave a “man” a blow job
(and show me any man who don’t like those),
she was stripped completely of all dignity,
no longer allowed to have a life,
let alone work.
Gossip fodder to the nth degree.
Sure, she was naive and stupidly fell in love with him,
a married "man",
but like that wouldn’t have happened
to a hundred million other women in her place.
I know of what I speak because I met the “man”
and I can attest to his charisma and charm,
not one of them hypocrites who calls herself a feminist.
But if either of them should be ashamed,
it is he.
He was the most powerful man in the world,
and he chose to lie about her to protect himself.
He got to keep his job,
not to mention his privileged life.
Sort of like that other lyin', cheatin', self-serving "man"
who humiliated its citizens while running the city of Toronto,
high on crack.
To date,
Rob Ford has got to be the worst role model for young men ever,
and he's responsible for tens of thousands of people.
But it seems karma has caught up with that bastard.
Then again, I wouldn't be surprised in the least
if the news of his cancer wasn't yet another lie,
you know, to gain sympathy.
But even if it were all untrue in the case of Lewinsky,
it doesn’t matter.
For you can take all the names out of the article,
and what she says about culture,
our culture of humiliation,
stands at 100% true.
