The Screaming Booth
by Live Music Head
After a stressful day at the office yesterday
where everything seemed to go wrong,
and I had visions of putting a gun
to my head
and pulling the trigger oh, about three or nine times...
I
went to work for Nuit Blanche,
finding out
upon arrival that I would be
an Information Ambassador for The
Screaming Booth,
an installation at the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario).
Ha!
Nothing could have been more appropo!
For it’s a public space for
those who would like to scream out loud,
to let off steam;
an art
installation “examining the relationship between
city dwellers and their
environment,
focusing on the inhibitions that individuals internalize
in public spaces.
The Screaming Booth is a solution to
the lack of
places in the city where
we can freely express our emotions.”
And I can
surely attest to that.
Finding an inch of sidewalk space to walk in
Toronto’s downtown core
gets more and more challenging every day,
not to
mention breathing room while riding the TTC,
and getting anywhere fast.
It was pitch dark and deadly silent inside the bright yellow booth,
where
I let out the deepest, most guttural scream I could muster.
Yes, I let 'er rip.
And how
exhilarating it was!
(We need at least three or nine of these
booths for the office).
It made me giddy.
And I wasn’t the only one.
The
line-up to get inside the box was steady all night long,
and I mean
steady,
very popular amongst the four art pieces on display
as a preview
to what will be happening
on Toronto streets this coming weekend.
Everyone wanted in the booth, and when they came out,
all were smiling
and laughing.
The Screaming Booth was created by
Chelanie
Beaudin-Quintin from Montreal,
who I spent a lot of time chatting with.
She’s prob’ly one of loveliest people I’ve ever met.
