Kate Mulgrew in Toronto

by Live Music Head

I haven’t started reading her memoir yet,
but I just watched the entire Toronto Public Library’s video
of when Kate Mulgrew made an appearance there
at the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon last month.
I was in attendance,
and was completely blown away by the intelligence,
wit, and great humour of the one we all know as
Mary from Ryan’s Hope,
Mrs. Columbo,
Cpt. Janeway from Star Trek Voyager,
and Red from Orange is the New Black.

Extremely well-spoken
(just like Cpt. Jean-Luc Picard
on Star Trek: The Next Generation;
something about them Star Trek captains,
Shakespearean),
Kate read an excerpt from her new book
Born with Teeth;
a story about her wildly eccentric mother
(which includes another Captain)
that instantly made me want to buy it,
which I did
and she autographed it for me after ward.
I have always been a fan of Kate Mulgrew,
ever since the early days of her career,
but after attending this reading,
this interview/Q&A/book signing,
and watching it again on video now,
Kate has become one of my favourite women of all time.

I may be raving,
but she’s more amazing than I ever knew!
And so well-spoken that I cry while I laugh,
listening to her speak.
I mean, it wasn’t just me.
The whole audience was rapt.
And the list of things that she said that I could relate to,
or that touched me in a large way,
is long,
way long!
Watch her tell that story about her mother here,
right now,
and the absolutely fantabulous interview she gives
to the Globe and Mail's Liz Renzetti that follows.
Watch the video in its entirety!
And if you do, that's me during the Q&A
asking her to tell a story from the time she was Mrs. Columbo,
and if she ever met Peter Falk.
She gave me a story alright,
and it's a good one!
