ZZ Top: Live From Texas
by Live Music Head
I don't consider myself a real fan
Like The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac
ZZ Top is a band I grew up listening to
A band that's made themselves so recognizable with those ridiculously long beards
And their driving southern rock blues sound
I know all their songs
How can I not?
But I still don't consider myself a real fan
If Wasted Time of Go Your Own Way or Cheap Sunglasses comes on the radio
I don't rush to turn the station
No, of course not
In fact, I'll probably start singing along
I know all the words to these songs
How can I not?
They're good songs
But I still don't consider myself a real fan
And the reason for this is simply because
I've never been interested in seeing any of these bands live
The real bands themselves or any cover bands doing their material
Not in the past or even now
And live music is where it's at for me
Nor have I followed the careers of any of these groups
Well
Perhaps I've followed them more than the average music fan
But not really
Or collected their music
I did have vinyl copies of Rumours and Hotel California at one time
But I simply can't recall where they disappeared to….
However
I do consider the 1979 ZZ Top record, Deguello
A really good record
So good, you'd swear it was a greatest hits compilation
And so it was with this in mind that I wanted to use the free passes I was given
For the premiere screening of ZZ Top: Live from Texas
I grabbed a friend to head over to the Scotiabank Theatre last night
Where we found ourselves sitting in the cinema
With a small group of others in our age group
Thoroughly enjoying the hugh amounts of popcorn I was shovelling into my stomach
Golden topping and all
When the lights dimmed
And there up on the big screen was
This power trio dressed in stylish black outfits on a very simple stage
Blasting out all their hits to an appreciative crowd in their hometown
Hmmm…
Billy Gibbons' voice is a little rough, but his guitar playing is pretty good
The cinema sound wasn't up to par and we actually lost visuals for a few minutes
Due to technical difficulties with the satellite feed I presume?
I'm enjoying this film more than I thought I would
And you know what?
The ZZ Top drummer, Frank Beard, bloody rocks!
My buddy was happy to hear his favourite, Tush
And we did get a good La Grange
But I would've preferred hearing Fool for Your Stockings or Lowdown in the Street
Rather than Cheap Sunglasses
And I really could've done without the furry guitars to accompany the song Legs
Uggh!
Should've taken a pee break during that one
I am definitely not a fan of the later ZZ Top material
But I must admit
I enjoyed watching this concert film
Particularly the drummer
Enough so that I stopped by Sonic Boom on the way home
To see if I could pick up a copy of Deguello on cd
No luck
But I see Amazon.ca has it for a mere eight bucks
So I added it to my shopping cart
